GISA at didacta – A unique place on the map

Written on 11 March 2026

At didacta in Cologne, Europe’s largest education fair, the global network of German schools abroad is being presented to visitors from across the education sector. At the joint stand of the German Federal Foreign Office and the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad (ZfA), a large world map illustrates the impressive global reach of German international education.

Among the many locations around the world, Accra stands out in a particularly remarkable way. The German International School Accra (GISA) occupies a very special position within the network of German schools abroad.

GISA is the only officially recognised German school in West Africa. Its closest partner schools within the network are thousands of kilometres away:

Addis Ababa – 4,310 km
Cairo – 4,273 km
Nairobi – 4,180 km
Windhoek – 3,648 km
Tenerife – 3,040 km

These distances highlight the important role GISA plays in the region. The school is not only a place of German education in Ghana, but also an important hub for German–Ghanaian educational cooperation across West Africa.

At didacta, Head of School Rainer Kropp-Kurta and Kindergarten Director Olivia Habtezghui are presenting the school and its steadily growing educational offer – from kindergarten and primary school to the expanding secondary programme.

The presence at didacta also provides an opportunity to connect with educators and attract new teachers who would like to contribute to the continued development of the school.

Even thousands of kilometres away from Germany, GISA demonstrates how education can connect people, cultures and languages — living up to its guiding idea: building bridges. 🌍
