Made in Germany builds bridges from Accra to Berlin

Last Saturday, 5 October 2024, our school party took place under the motto ‘Made in Germany’ as part of the AHK's ‘German Days’. The new project time introduced at the beginning of the school year, in which primary and secondary school pupils spend four or two school hours working intensively on a topic of their choice as part of a rhythmic all-day program, led to interesting hands-on activities. Soapbox races, parlor games, ‘Winter is coming’, paper making, German landscapes, all kinds of things to do with gummy bears or gingerbread making attracted crowds of children. The crate stacking and an exercise course organized by the ‘Ghana Mountaineers’ with Kevin Stepper and his team were also a particular magnet.

In short presentations, skillfully moderated by James from ‘Comedy BAR Ghana’, the pupils and their teachers delighted the large audience. The youngest children from the kindergarten kicked things off with the ‘Gummy Bear Song’. German inventions were depicted in a variety of presentations on the topics of Zeppelin, Berta Benz and Johannes Gutenberg. The beautiful home-knitted scarves were presented in a fashion show and there was dancing to 99 balloons. A special honor was an educational contribution from the French school, the Lycée Français International Jacques Prévert, about typical German baking, led by headmistress Catherine Dauer. The atmospheric finale was provided by the ‘German Rap’ group with a self-made video and a rousing live performance.

The musical finale with German classics and Afro beats was provided by the ‘GG Brass Band’. The groovy brass music encouraged the audience to dance into the night. German specialties are not always easy to find in Accra. So it was all the more pleasing that some typical German food were on offer with schnitzel and potato salad from Mimi's ‘Roots and Soul’ and Currywurst and Kässpätzle from Eva's ‘The North Ridge Cafe’.

The typical German coffee and cake buffet organized by the parents was also well attended. Many visitors savored a delicious piece of homemade cake. German Bundesliga could not be missed!
