A Celebrated Musical Premiere, International University Partnerships and a Wide Range of End-of-Year Activities Highlight the Vibrant Life of the German International School Accra. At the same time, preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026 and our holiday programmes are already underway. Here is an overview of the latest news and upcoming events.
Enthusiastic Premiere of “Anigyeɛ – The Magic Drum”
Thursday evening’s premiere of “Anigyeɛ – The Magic Drum” concluded with prolonged applause from an enthusiastic audience. This creative adaptation of Disney’s Encanto, reimagined in a Ghanaian setting, captivated visitors with vibrant dance performances, music and acting.
Even before the show began, guests were guided through a specially created marketplace into the village of Anigyeɛ, becoming part of the experience from the very start. Under the leadership of Sara Debackere and Ramona Klaes, and with the support of 16 teachers and support staff, the entire school community contributed to this remarkable production.
“Nana Adwoa as the strict grandmother completely blew me away,” said Ramona Klaes after the performance. Sara Debackere added, “Alexis’ solo dance as Abena was absolutely stunning.”
As a special surprise, the cast concluded the evening with Headmaster Rainer Kropp-Kurta’s favourite song, “Don’t Stop Me Now” by Queen. In his closing remarks, he praised everyone involved and presented flowers to the 16 teachers and support staff in recognition of their outstanding commitment.
We look forward to the second performance this Friday evening.
Student Teachers from Winneba Visit the German International School Accra
On Monday and Tuesday, the German International School Accra welcomed six student teachers from the University of Education, Winneba (UEW). During their visit, the students observed lessons across all grade levels and gained valuable insights into the daily life of a German school abroad.
The future teachers were highly impressed by the positive learning environment, the educational approaches and the strong sense of community throughout the school. The visit also provided opportunities to discuss teaching methods, language support and German-Ghanaian educational cooperation.
The visit is part of a broader educational development: German has recently been introduced as a regular subject in Ghanaian public schools, and German teacher training has been established as a new field of study at the University of Education, Winneba. As a partner and host school, the German International School Accra actively supports this development and contributes to the training of a new generation of German teachers in Ghana.
A key factor in this process is the close cooperation with the DAAD, particularly with Anett Geithner, who has played an important role in developing German teacher education in Ghana.
The partnership will continue next week when another six students from UEW, along with two student teachers from the University of Passau, will visit the school for classroom observations and professional exchange.

Nursery and Kindergarten
The children in the Nursery celebrated a second birthday this week with songs, cake and the movement game “Butterfly, You Little Thing.” Through these shared experiences, they strengthened their sense of community while developing their language and social skills.
As part of their water theme, the children also carried out a simple science experiment: “What floats and what sinks?” By making predictions, observing results and exploring different materials, they gained their first hands-on scientific experiences in a playful and engaging way.
It was a week full of discovery, learning and fun.
In Kindergarten, the week was both creative and magical. The children made their own modelling clay, built castles from cardboard tubes and designed beautiful princesses. Along the way, they practised folding, cutting, gluing and painting while expressing their creativity.
The children also immersed themselves in the world of fairy tales, listening to stories and solving exciting riddles together.
A special highlight was the school musical performances. The Kindergarten children contributed a song and took to the stage with great enthusiasm and confidence, making everyone proud.
Of course, there was plenty of time for active play as well. Climbing, running and enjoying the sandbox provided lots of fun and opportunities to develop gross motor skills while spending time outdoors in the fresh air. 🌞🎭🏰👸
Primary School
Class 1/2
In Science, the students explored the topic of healthy nutrition. Using the food pyramid, they learned why some foods are particularly important for our bodies while others should only be consumed in moderation. They sorted foods into different groups, completed a worksheet and reinforced their learning through interactive activities on their tablets.
In German, the children worked on a reading trail story about animals living on the African continent. They carefully read the text, extracted information, answered questions and created questions of their own. This helped to strengthen both their reading comprehension and reading fluency.
In Mathematics, some students worked with the board game Azul. The game combined logic, strategy and mathematical thinking while also developing their understanding of patterns, shapes and design.
Class 3/4
In German, we completed our reading portfolios and practised presentation skills. The children presented their work and gained valuable experience in speaking confidently in front of others.
As part of their individual learning pathways, the students explored different sentence elements and how they function within sentences. They also focused on words with final consonant devoicing and learned spelling strategies to help them identify the correct spelling more confidently.
In Mathematics, multiplication and division remained the main focus. The children practised both mental arithmetic and written calculation methods with great enthusiasm.
Our Grade 4 students can now solve challenging calculations such as 345 × 36. Meanwhile, the Grade 3 students investigated multiples within different times tables, discovering interesting patterns and mathematical relationships.
In English and Science, Classes 3 and 4 embarked on an exciting journey through space. The students created detailed diagrams of the Earth and Moon, explored the different phases of the Moon and carried out practical science activities.
They also calculated the distance between the Earth and the Moon and modelled how the Moon orbits our planet. Through these hands-on activities, complex scientific concepts became tangible and engaging. It was a fascinating unit that sparked curiosity, wonder and a passion for discovery. 🚀🌍🌙
Secondary School
Class 5
Following our most recent Mathematics test, we welcomed student teachers from Winneba into our classroom and continued our work on calculating areas. By breaking complex shapes into simpler ones, the students are now able to determine the area of more challenging figures.
In Biology, the students explored how the human body processes food. They learned the difference between digestion as a process and the digestive system as the collection of organs responsible for carrying it out. They also identified the key organs involved in digestion and nutrient absorption, gaining a fascinating insight into how our bodies convert food into energy.
Physical Education focused on movement, creativity and teamwork. After spending several lessons practising human pyramids and creating their own movement sequences, the students presented their work to the entire PE group of Classes 5 and 6. The demanding exercises required trust, consideration and strong cooperation within the teams. Through this experience, students discovered that challenges are easier to overcome together and that success is built on mutual support and teamwork.
This creative and artistic unit was particularly enjoyable. The students loved developing their own ideas, bringing them to life as a team and presenting them to an audience. The encouraging and constructive feedback from their peers was also highly motivating.

Exciting, informative and creative results emerged from the project “Germany’s Neighbours in a Shoebox.” Students researched countries such as the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Denmark, presenting their findings in imaginative and visually appealing ways.
Class 6
Another exciting, interesting and enjoyable week has passed in Class 6.
At the beginning of the week, Ethics lessons focused on the topic of identity. Students reflected on their own strengths and weaknesses and shared their thoughts on areas in which they already excel and skills they would like to develop further. It quickly became clear how many different talents exist within the class and how valuable it is to support and learn from one another.

In German, students continued working on important grammar and spelling topics. Together, they revised and deepened their understanding of key rules through a variety of engaging activities. Reading lessons were particularly productive this week as students continued working on their class novels and completed numerous creative tasks in their reading journals. Alongside focused work, there was also plenty of time for enjoyable and relaxed moments.
In Mathematics, students were introduced to a new and exciting topic: algebraic expressions. They learned that expressions can be used to describe mathematical relationships and encountered variables for the first time. To make the concept more tangible, different materials were assigned variable values—for example, wooden sticks represented “3x,” matches represented “z,” and hair clips represented “b.” Students then created their own expressions and matched them to real-life situations, discovering how mathematics can be used to describe everyday relationships precisely.
In Biology, students explored the topic of human growth and development. They learned about the structure and functions of the human reproductive organs and gained an age-appropriate understanding of the differences between the male and female body. The class also discussed puberty and the physical, emotional and social changes that occur during adolescence. Open discussions and informative lessons helped students gain a deeper understanding of this important stage of life.
Physical Education combined sport and creativity. Students presented the human pyramids and choreographies they had developed over previous weeks to the entire PE group of Classes 5 and 6. The challenging formations required trust, cooperation and careful coordination, once again highlighting the importance of teamwork and mutual support.
We look back on a varied and successful week and are already looking forward to the next challenges and experiences together.
Class 7/8
In German, Classes 7 and 8 focused on reviewing and analysing their most recent class test. Together, students revisited important grammar and spelling topics, examined common mistakes and developed strategies to improve their language skills. Through varied exercises and interactive revision activities, they were able to consolidate their knowledge and strengthen their understanding.
During joint lessons for native German speakers (DaM) and German learners (DaF), students continued working intensively on their class novels. With great concentration and perseverance, they completed creative and challenging tasks that helped them better understand and reflect on the texts. Reading passages aloud to one another proved especially enjoyable, while also improving reading fluency, pronunciation, expression and comprehension.
As part of Ethics, the students visited the National Mosque in Accra. The impressive architecture and unique atmosphere left a lasting impression on everyone. During the guided tour, students learned a great deal about Islam and religious life. Many took the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions and learn more about religion and culture. We would like to thank the mosque and our tour guide for the informative visit and warm welcome.
In Social Studies, students examined Australia’s recently introduced social media ban for young people under the age of 16. They engaged in lively discussions about the opportunities and risks associated with social media and debated the potential consequences of such a ban.
Mathematics lessons focused first on revision and preparation before students completed their class test. Important topics were reviewed, practice tasks discussed and remaining questions clarified.
Biology lessons began a new unit on sex education. Students were introduced to a question box, allowing them to submit anonymous questions, and together established discussion guidelines to ensure a respectful and open learning environment. Initial lessons focused on friendships and conflicts.
A later lesson explored the principle “No Means No.” Using discussion cards, students reflected on different situations, personal boundaries and the importance of consent and respect. The class also discussed whether the concept of “Only Yes Means Yes” places even greater emphasis on active consent.
Students also learned about sex hormones and their role in the physical and emotional changes experienced during puberty.
In Geography, the focus was on Germany’s glacial landscape sequence. Students investigated why large glacial erratics can be found in northern Germany today and how terminal moraine landscapes were formed during the Ice Ages.
In History, students completed a wall display comparing different revolutions and highlighting historical similarities. At the same time, they began exploring Great Britain and Germany in the nineteenth century and were introduced to the Industrial Revolution.
In Physical Education, small groups presented choreographed human pyramid performances accompanied by music. The presentations showcased many creative ideas and impressive routines.
Another highlight of the week was the final German class test of the school year. After intensive preparation, extensive reading, varied exercises and practising summaries of informational texts, students finally had the opportunity to demonstrate what they had learned.
As always, learning continued after the test. During subsequent German lessons, students revisited key aspects of spelling and punctuation. Together, they analysed common errors, reviewed important rules and strengthened their understanding through a variety of practice activities, providing a strong foundation for the coming school year.
