From a Grain of Maize to a Hen’s Nest – Class 1/2 Visits De Heus and a Poultry Farm in Tema
Our Class 1/2 trip to De Heus in Tema and the neighbouring poultry farm was a special day. The team gave us a warm welcome, handed out visitor badges and invited us to breakfast in the canteen. After a chance to stretch our legs in the garden, we joined Mama Safety for a safety briefing in the conference room. High-visibility vests, hairnets and earplugs were already waiting for us.
With our safety gear on, we were ready to explore the animal feed factory. We followed the route the ingredients take, from the delivery area and the enormous silos through to the production and packaging areas. Along the way, we made a funny discovery. At school, we use the German word Förderband for a learning support session. Here in the factory, it was an actual conveyor belt, carrying things from one place to another!
In the laboratory, we took a close look at maize, wheat, soya beans and even oyster shells. We also compared the finished feed and discovered how the mixtures differed for chicks, laying hens and fish.
Back in the conference room, we watched a film about chickens and had plenty of time to ask questions. Then each of us filled a small bag with feed, ready for our walk to the nearby poultry farm.
At the farm, we got close enough to watch the chickens eat the feed we had brought for them. There was a surprise for us, too. We were given fresh eggs to take back to De Heus, where the kitchen team boiled them especially for us. With eggs from the very farm we had just visited, we felt like VIPs as we enjoyed lunch in the canteen.
A big thank you to everyone at De Heus who made us feel so welcome, showed us around and took the time to answer all our questions. You made this a day to remember!
