Newsletter 03.05.2024
This Sunday we will be hosting the GISA Cup for the first time and are delighted that 19 teams from different companies, institutions and embassies representing 12 nations will be taking part. Although soccer is the main focus, the GISA Cup is also a wonderful family event to spend a wonderful Sunday together with friends and family. In addition to delicious food and drink, we have organized great children's activities: A bouncy castle, craft fun, face painting and goal wall shooting will be available for the children from 10 am. Games on Wheels will also be on site with various activities. From 2.30 pm, we can look forward to live music from the BigBrainBand. You may remember the BigBrainBand from our Christmas market! You can also look forward to one or two surprises on the day. Feel free to share the event with friends and family as well as at your workplace. We are ready and looking forward to an exciting, eventful day with you.
On Monday, 06.05.2024, it's also all about the round leather: 12 school teams from six schools will compete against each other in the Kids Edition of the GISA Cup. You are cordially invited to take part in this as well, the tournament time is from 8.30 am to approx. 2 pm.
As announced, a working group has discussed the extended opening hours of the kindergarten and nursery during the school vacations. Thanks to the commitment of our nursery teachers and the vacation camp team led by all-day coordinator Sara Debackere, we will be able to offer you a significantly extended range of free services in future. You can find the revised plan here: German International School Accra - School Calendar (gis-accra.org)
For two days, the extended school management, all-day coordinator Sara Debackere, head of kindergarten Rudi Boakye, deputy Deike Akorful and headmaster Rainer Kropp-Kurta, joined by PQM representative Ramona Klaes and German as a foreign language teacher Benjamin Akrong, retreated to the mountains of Aburi. They have brought with them an extended support concept, a rhythmic daily routine with a balance of academic demands and plenty of room for creativity, movement, music and action orientation. More information will follow.
The Board of Directors was the last committee of the school to consider the paedagocical mission statement, the school's “vision and mission”, and welcomed the result. In future, DISA will operate under the motto “Building bridges”. We will publish the mission statement shortly.
Kindergarten and nursery:
In keeping with the theme of water, the children in the nursery made sensory water bottles with fish, shells and glitter.
The kindergarten received a visit this week. The mother of one of the kindergarten children is a physiotherapist and told us about her exciting profession with the help of some pictures and videos and we were able to learn something about our bones, for example. Thanks again for that! We also tried our hand at baking this week. We made delicious brownies that we ate ourselves and shared with the teachers from the whole school. During learning time this week, we got to know some musical instruments. We have seen what they look like, heard their sound and have already learned some of their names. In the coming weeks, we want to continue learning about different instruments during learning time. We also celebrated two birthdays in the kindergarten this week. From next week, our development talks will start in the kindergarten.
Primary school:
An exciting week comes to an end for class 1/2. In the science lessons, the topic of “senses” was explored in an action-oriented way. Among other things, an obstacle course was tackled blindfolded and smells were put under the magnifying glass and under the nose. Saying thank you, arguing, criticizing in a friendly manner and apologizing sincerely were all practiced in the class council. The social skills of the class are constantly improving and the letters to each other are becoming more and more extensive and creative.
What a start to the week! We were able to celebrate two birthdays on Monday morning. Cake, muffins and sweets made us forget the weekend in no time and we were able to start our lessons bright and early. In class 3/4, the children took the last of the three Vera exams last Thursday - mathematics. Afterwards, they went swimming at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel. Most of the learning development meetings have been completed, with only a few more meetings scheduled for next week. We appreciate the great interest shown by our parents in their children's learning progress and thank them for their participation and valuable feedback during these meetings. Many children in the class have signed up to take part in the soccer tournament on Monday. That makes us very happy. Now it's time to keep our fingers crossed and cheer loudly... If your child is playing in one of the soccer teams on Monday, you are welcome to attend the event and cheer them on. And so another week of learning, living, laughing and sweating in class 3/4 comes to an end. The last week was characterized by great motivation and a wonderful working atmosphere.
Secondary school:
This week was all about the GISA Cup. The students have continued to work on their projects for the weekend and are looking forward to welcoming numerous guests. In addition to the preparations, they also continued to work on school subjects. In mathematics, Year 6 are currently working on decimal fractions. In English, the class is continuing to work on reading about bullying. In history, the class is currently focusing on the ancient Egyptians. The class wishes everyone a great weekend and looks forward to welcoming everyone to the goal wall.
