Gerald Asamoah-Foundation
The former professional footballer's foundation operates on children with heart disease in West Africa. The German International School supports this project and provides a scholarship per academic year.
"How does it feel when you win"? "How many goals have you scored?" - Former national soccer player Gerald Asamoah patiently answered questions like these during his visit to the German International School Accra (GISA) in Ghana. The reason for his visit: On behalf of his foundation, he had just been in the country with a team of doctors from the Duisburg Heart Center to provide 20 children with heart disease with life-saving operations. One of these children is now receiving a scholarship from the German school.
Asamoah wants to ensure that the children in the Gerald Asamoah Foundation's care are in the best hands, he took the opportunity during his stay in Ghana to visit the facility that one of the children will soon be attending. After kicking a ball around the soccer pitch with the pupils for three hours and talking to all the school and kindergarten children in the classrooms, he finally came to the very satisfied conclusion: "A totally positive spirit emanates from this school and I already know that the child is in the best educational hands."
Martin Wilde, chairman of GISA, in turn praised the commitment of the foundation and the heart specialists who operated on children from all over the country at the University Hospital in Accra. "Our school is a place of encounter. German and Ghanaian culture come together here, which is what makes us so special. That's why it was absolutely clear to us that we wanted to support this campaign and give one of the children a full scholarship for their entire school career." The school is attended by children and young people from nursery and kindergarten through to primary and secondary school. The children come from Germany and Ghana, but also from countries such as Switzerland, the Netherlands, Colombia and the UK.
The German-Ghanaian ex-footballer with a heart is therefore exactly the right ambassador for building bridges between Ghana and Germany at GISA. The head of the Gerald Asamoah Foundation, Jens Conrad, and principal Rainer Kropp-Kurta, who prepared the scholarship together, are looking forward to the partnership.
The Gerald Asamoah Foundation for Children with Heart Disease and the German International School Accra (DISA) sealed their intensified cooperation in May 2024. Foundation board member Stephan Brune and school board chairman Martin Wilde signed the cooperation agreement in Gelsenkirchen.

Every year, DISA provides a full scholarship for one of the Ghanaian children who receive life-saving heart surgery with the help of the Gerald Asamoah Foundation. In addition, the school community supports the surgeons and nurses with logistics during their stay in Ghana.
