Newsletter 16.05.2024

Due to the long weekend with the Whitsun holidays, this week's newsletter will be published on Thursday. We wish you a relaxing and/or exciting long weekend. The next school day is Tuesday, 21.05.2024 according to schedule.

5C8A3367On Tuesday, we were able to catch up on the GISA Cup for schools, which had to be canceled on May 6, 2024 due to bad weather conditions. 12 girls' and boys' teams competed against each other. Both GISA teams did extremely well. Coach Enoch's team took 6th place in an exciting match against the team from Universal Wonderful Street Academy from Jamestown, while Laura Lützeler's team took 4th place in the girls' group.

Many thanks to all participating teams and congratulations to Al-Rayan International School and De Youngsters International School on their victory! We had a great day and are looking forward to the next Cup.

As so many girls at the school are interested in playing football, there will be a girls' football club from next Tuesday. This will take place after school during AG time and will be led by Laura Lützeler. The club is free of charge, as there are only a few weeks left until the summer vacation. We would be delighted if lots of players took part. Please bring sturdy shoes, sunscreen and sports gear.

Flyer Rapunzel English JPGAs we approach the final weeks before the highly anticipated musical performance of Rapunzel on June 13 at 6pm at the Goethe-Institut, please note that tickets can be purchased from the school administration. The Gerald Asamoah Foundation for Children with Heart Disease and the German International School Accra (DISA) sealed their intensified cooperation in May 2024. Foundation board member Stephan Brune and school board chairman Martin Wilde signed the cooperation agreement in Gelsenkirchen. Every year, DISA provides a full scholarship for one of the Ghanaian children who receive life-saving heart surgery with the help of the Gerald Asamoah Foundation. In addition, the school community supports the surgeons and nurses with logistics during their stay in Ghana.

Kindergarten and Nursery:

We made great footprints and handprints. And realized what we have in our faces! We also sang the song 'About me' and 'Head, shoulders, knees and feet'. On Thursday, we found a praying mantis on our terrace! Of course we had to take a closer look at it!

The short week in kindergarten began with an exciting football tournament. We cheered on the school children diligently and had a lot of fun! We also did sports ourselves and let off steam in the sports room with various exercise games and an obstacle course. We also unpacked our children's sewing machine this week and learned how to sew our own bags. We even made creative pictures from the leftover fabric. During learning time, we continued to focus on different musical instruments. We divided the group and painted drums in small groups on the various days, played games about different musical instruments and tried out some musical instruments ourselves in the music room.

Primary school:

There was a lot to do in a short week in class 1/2, starting with the exciting football tournament with parallel classroom activities such as puzzles, crafts, chess and Skippo. In ethics, the topic of helping and accepting help was discussed - a topic that is easy for the children, as the class is characterized by a great willingness to help. In creative writing, a story is currently being developed about a play date that has gone off the rails. More and more people are coming and there will be another honey trap - creativity at full speed. The science lessons were about hunger and healthy eating. Last but not least, Irina and her team have now also embellished the sink and next week the door will have a fresh coat of paint. For the calendar: swimming is on the agenda again on May 24.

"GISA forward, one more goal," was the loud cry across the football pitch on Tuesday. Many of the children from Class 3/4 were involved and represented our school with dignity, fun and sporting spirit at the GISA Kids Cup. Class 3 are currently working on sentence structures in their German lessons. By writing down sentences, cutting them up into sentence elements and putting them together in different ways, it quickly became clear how diverse the German language and sentence structure can be. Next Friday we are planning an excursion with class 3/4 to put the finishing touches to our pottery skills. The last few weeks before the summer vacations are still packed with exams, our musical performance, our end-of-year party, the pottery course, our school trip to Aburi and so on... Boredom in class 3/4? Not a chance!

Secondary school:

The week began with regular lessons on Monday. In the German lessons, the topics of argumentation and discussion were on the curriculum. The students had the opportunity to improve their skills in the art of argumentation and to discuss controversial topics. The highlight of the week was the GISA Cup on Tuesday. Some students took part in the football tournament, while others actively cheered on their fellow students. It was a great opportunity for teamwork and community spirit. On Wednesday, normal lessons returned. In English, both classes continued their reading of "There's a Boy in the Girls' Bathroom", while in math, basic arithmetic was practiced. Year 6 pupils deepened their understanding of decimals. Thursday was an important day as the German paper was written. The pupils had the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills on the topic of argumentation. Overall, it was a varied week that provided the students with both academic and sporting challenges and gave them the opportunity to develop important skills and grow together as a team. Class 5 and 6 wish everyone a long and enjoyable weekend.

Grades 5/6 will be joining the children from Chance for Children on a trip to the beach next Wednesday, May 22. Pupils will be able to enjoy bodyboard surfing and various beach games. Lunch will be provided by the school and we will ensure that all children are back in time for the usual pick-up time. Be sure to bring your beach gear (swimsuit, t-shirt for surfing, drinks and snacks). We are looking forward to a great day at the beach!
