Newsletter 30.08.2024
The school year really gets rolling in week 3, with the new features of the educational boost and project time (new impressions of landscapes, winter and inventions) as well as the informative parents' evenings (many thanks to the new parents' representatives), the celebration of Swiss National Day and the return of the Junior Mountaineers to their birthplace.
Junior Mountaineers
We are delighted to announce another collaboration with the Junior Mountaineers! The Junior Mountaineers are returning to their original format, with three skills training sessions at GISA, three hikes in the Accra Plains and a camping weekend at the end of the semester. The skills training will take place on Saturdays at the German International School, where the children will learn basics such as first aid, fire science and camping and then apply this knowledge on hikes. All hikes also take place on Saturdays and lunch is provided. Please see the attached flyer for dates and further details. The semester fee is $320 USD and covers all activities, transportation and meals. For registration and more information, please contact

On Wednesday, 18.09.2024 from 6 pm to 8 pm there will be a network meeting at the Swiss Club. GISA parents would like to bring together a wide range of professional activities.
Extracurricular program
The try-out weeks for our extracurricular activities have been a great success! It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm and joy on the faces of our students as they explored a variety of activities, from football and chess to aftercare, choir, LEGO Technics, drumming, piano and so much more. We hope everyone enjoyed the experience and discovered new passions and interests. With the registration now complete, we are excited to begin our full schedule of activities next week.
Here is the current menu from the North Ridge Café:
We start the new month with a new school lunch menu of North Ridge Café. We also had a great meeting this Wednesday with North Ridge, the parents' representative, and class representatives to discuss the next menu and provide recommendations. Please remember to contact the cafe at 0596094940 or Sara Debackere if your child is absent from school. Otherwise, lunch will be included in the order, and you will be charged. Thank you for your cooperation!
Tomorrow, Saturday, August 31, 2024, we will again be showing the Bundesliga conference in the Swiss Club. Members of the school community are welcome to invite friends.
Kindergarten and Nursery:
Last week we popped bubbles in the nursery and were amazed at how the bubbles flew in the air. We also filled balloons with salt and flour. This allowed the children to practice their fine motor skills and it was great fun to knead the ball afterwards! Everyone enjoyed dancing to “1, 2, 3 in a whiz” and it was great fun to learn the choreography. Of course, there was also plenty of time to play and explore alongside our activities!
The kindergarten children had a lot of energy this week, which is why playing in the garden and a few dance sessions were of course a must. Some of the children were also able to go back to the exercise room and play various exercise games. There was also a lot of painting and crafting this week, for example a big yellow sun and lots of colorful new pictures for our picture frames. In English this week, the children also discussed colors, numbers, days of the week and months. The advanced group also found different opposites. The eagerly awaited preschool also finally got off to a good start this week. The children now go to the preschool room with Ramona Klaes for a lesson every day, getting to know the premises, new materials and their future teacher better and better. At the same time, learning time has also started again, in which we have repeated colors, learned numbers from 1 to 10 and done cutting exercises this week.
Primary School:
Class 1/2 had a lot to do this week: In art, the children made butterflies after finishing the picnic blanket pictures from last week. Speaking of butterflies, the butterfly group found Sudokus a hard nut to crack during the educational boost lessons, while the squirrels worked on spelling strategies using the Fresch method. The millipedes practiced recognising dice images and compared quantities in the "Zahlenbuch". In English, stories were retold: feel free to ask your children about the stories "Don't spill the milk" and "It's much too early". In Science, the parts of plants were named. The children now recognise and name: leaf, flower, stem and roots. In maths, tens and ones were visualised and even put to sound. Stroking a wooden stick across the table meant tens, tapping meant ones. The children were able to hear and recognise numbers up to 100.
Class 3/4 had their parents' evening on Wednesday. Thank you very much for your participation! The children made paper airplanes in art this week and had a lot of fun flying them in the schoolyard. In German, class 3 and 4 are still working on (pro-) nouns. Next week class 4 will complete this with a small test. In math, we are now starting with the new number range - class 3 is now working up to 1,000 and class 4 up to 1,000,000. In English, Clemencia Majoga is working on story features: describing people. In English with Laura Lützeler, we created our own store and invited the kindergarten children to buy waffles, pizza and sandwiches. In Science we worked on the skeletal system and part of the plants. Next week this will be put into practice in practical sessions.
Secondary School:
Another week is drawing to a close in the 5th/6th grade. It feels like we are slowly getting into our routines. The routines are more adapted and we have grown together even better. The first small tests have also been written and assignments handed in. This week we want to emphasize HTW and the students' skills. We are currently building robots out of wood and have used machines to saw out components, among other things. Many pupils are benefiting from their previous knowledge here. They sawed and sanded with a steady hand, because when building with wood, accuracy is more important than speed. Seeds of tomatoes, beans and other vegetables were planted in Science. They sprouted within a week and are now up to 10 centimeters high. An incredible process that was closely observed and documented. On Tuesday, teachers and parents came together at the first parents' evening of the semester. It was nice to meet you all and spend a pleasant hour with you. The election of the parent representatives was a matter of seconds and thanks go out to Thorsten van Honk. “This week the tryouts in the AG's were something special,” mentions a 6th grade student.
This week in year 7 we have been working intensively with terms and negative numbers. In the third and fourth lessons, we went to the swimming pool where we learnt how to crawl. Despite the cold water temperatures due to the weather, we had a lot of fun and made good progress. The seventh-graders learnt about the Roman Empire through station-based learning, while plate tectonics was on the geography timetable. In biology, we presented our cell drawings. The pupils presented their work and explained in detail the different cell structures they had drawn. It was impressive to see how well they had dealt with the topic. It is particularly worth emphasising that we worked in small groups in German to describe an experiment that we had previously carried out. The results were presented creatively and precisely. On Thursday, we wrote a French test, which was easier than expected. In PE lessons, we practised throwing a frisbee. The aim was to throw the frisbee accurately from one goal to another. In English, we worked on ‘sentences’ and the four types of sentences (statement, question, command, exclamation). The pupils have learnt to recognise and use these different types of sentences correctly. Together with Samuel, we installed the Office package on the school computers. This will be very useful for the upcoming projects and tasks. On Wednesdays, in the 7th and 8th lessons, we have started an exciting new project. We are building a surprise that you will see in our school playground on 5 October. The team is working on it with a lot of enthusiasm! We can look back on an eventful and educational week and look forward to the challenges ahe
