Open Day at GISA – A School to Experience

On Saturday, April 12, 2025, the German International School Accra (GISA) opened its doors to interested families, curious children, and valued partners. From 3 to 6 PM, the school presented itself with a fresh event concept: not a traditional school festival, but a focused presentation of its high-quality educational work and a clear invitation for families to explore what makes GISA special.

With confidence and educational flair, GISA demonstrated how it harmoniously combines the German curriculum from Thuringia with the international Cambridge program – creating a compelling offer for both international and local students.

Learning in Action – Interactive Stations and Hands-On Insights

Children received an activity card upon arrival and were invited to explore the school by completing small tasks at various interactive stations. Those who engaged actively were rewarded at the end with a surprise from GISA’s very own merchandise collection.

Highlights included the mini planetarium in Grade 7 led by Claudia Aßmann, holistic learning experiences in Grades 5/6 with Alex Tetteyfio Bergfeld, a sports obstacle course with Nana Amoah Asare, and an exciting journey through the human body in the “Lab” with Apaw Russell Adu.

A special attraction was presented by Patrick Blanke-Schelle: the brand-new "Active Floor", an innovative learning tool from Denmark that combines movement and digital learning in a playful way.

In the Primary School, Ramona Klaes gave visitors an impressive look at GISA’s individualized support for each child – a core element of the school's philosophy.

Education with Perspective – Bilingualism and Future Opportunities

Two central questions guided many conversations:
How can I learn German well enough to study or begin vocational training in Germany?
And how do the German and international curricula work together?

These questions were addressed by Benjamin Akrong and Bernard Adjei Boateng, who presented the structured approach to German as a Foreign Language (DaF). Meanwhile, Clementia Mayoga, Apaw Russell Adu, and Bernard Prah Mensah, supported by students, explained the seamless integration of both curricula and the many benefits of bilingual learning.

Early Childhood Education – A Place for the Youngest with Big Ideas

Even the youngest visitors had plenty to explore. The committed Early Years team, led by Evans Rudolph Boakye, proudly showcased the recently renovated and lovingly designed spaces for the nursery and kindergarten. With a focus on cognitive, motor, social, and personal development, bilingualism, and creativity, the program provides a well-rounded and nurturing foundation – allowing children to be children while preparing them for school and life.

Encounters, Conversations, and Networking

In addition to current GISA families, former teachers, future staff members, and key partners of the school joined the event. Representatives of the Alliance for the German Language (Erich R. Mosebach), the Thuringian Chamber of Crafts (Undine Zentgraf), and the Jakob-Christian-Adam Foundation (Martin Wilde) used the event as a valuable networking opportunity.

At the Swiss Club, interested parents connected with members of the GISA Parents’ Association, led by Thorsten van Honk, who shared their positive experiences and insights into everyday school life. Meanwhile, the school's caterer, North Ridge Café, offered delicious samples of its lunch menu.

A Strong Outlook – GISA Presents Its Best Self

The school’s leadership team – Headmaster Rainer Kropp-Kurta, Deputy Deike Akorful, head of administration Katrin Krüger, Kita Director Evans Rudolph Boakye, All day coordinator Sara Debackere , and Board Member Robert Lüdtke – was unanimously positive in its assessment:
A well-designed concept that actively involved children, provided detailed information to parents, and created space for meaningful dialogue.

A heartfelt thank you goes to the entire GISA team for their outstanding commitment in showcasing a school that not only teaches – but inspires.
