freeze frame construction

Our seventh graders are currently reading the young adult novel “Holes“ and learned about freeze frame construction this week. Freeze-framing is a creative method in literature lessons in which pupils present a scene from a literary text as a “living freeze-frame” using body language and facial expressions. In doing so, they freeze in a certain pose in order to make the central conflicts, emotions or relationships of the characters visible.

This method is particularly useful because it deepens understanding of the text by allowing learners to actively engage with the characters and their motives. It also promotes empathy, as the pupils have to put themselves in the characters' shoes. The visual and physical realization also sharpens interpretative thinking and allows different interpretations to be experienced directly. And what's more, it's also fun!
