Making Fire Like in the Stone Age πŸ”₯ – A Journey Through History and Nature

Written on 23 October 2025

This week, our Grade 5 and 6 students brought history to life! As part of their Stone Age unit, learning became a hands-on adventure – in the true spirit of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi’s principle: β€œLearning with head, heart, and hand.” This experiential approach is not only a cornerstone of German pedagogy but also a guiding principle of GISA.

To make Stone Age life more tangible, Kevin Stepper from the Ghana Mountaineers visited the classes. After an inspiring and refreshing presentation about life in the wild, Kevin demonstrated how to make fire without a lighter or matches – just using sparks, patience, and the right tinder. The students eagerly explored the school grounds for natural materials and, after some effort, managed to ignite small flames of their own!

Excitement and curiosity filled the air. Kevin summed it up perfectly: β€œIt was great fun – thanks for the gift! Maybe we really should start a survival or outdoor club at school. The kids were totally into it and immediately asked what we’ll do next!” πŸ˜ƒ

History teacher and principal Rainer Kropp-Kurta expressed his gratitude for this vivid journey into the past – a lesson that blended historical learning with a touch of survival training and plenty of discovery spirit.

πŸ‘‰ At GISA, learning means experiencing, understanding, and creating!
