Healthy Breakfast at GISA – Learning with Enjoyment, Eating with Awareness

This Wednesday, the German International School Accra dedicated an entire morning to the topic of healthy eating – hands-on, age-appropriate, and full of enthusiasm for discovering, preparing, and enjoying food together.

Kindergarten: Discovering Nutrition Through Play

In Kindergarten, everything revolved around the question: Which foods are good for our bodies, and which should we enjoy only occasionally? In lively group discussions, the children shared what they love to eat and learned what it means for something to be “healthy”. A particular highlight was the playful introduction to the food pyramid, using colorful images and fun activities to explore which foods give us energy and why a balanced, varied diet matters.

The day’s big moment was the healthy breakfast buffet, lovingly prepared with the help of families. Fresh fruits, crunchy vegetables, whole grain bread, and homemade spreads filled the tables – a delicious and educational experience. The children were proud of the shared meal, and we sincerely thank all families for making it possible.

Grades 1/2: Learning with All Senses

In Grades 1 and 2, the topic was introduced in English lessons: together, students sorted foods into a food pyramid and discussed what makes up a healthy breakfast. On Wednesday, each child brought fruits or vegetables from home. Together, they prepared fresh fruit and vegetable salads – a joyful and hands-on activity. Many students proudly added these homemade creations to their own meals.

The morning concluded with a child-friendly film that explained why healthy eating is so important – and how tasty it can be, too.

Grades 3/4: Exposing Hidden Sugar

Students in Grades 3 and 4 also explored the food pyramid and took a close look at sugar content in drinks. With a visual display in the classroom, they were surprised to see how much sugar is hidden in popular beverages – an eye-opening experience.

Their healthy breakfast followed the pyramid’s guidelines: just half a slice of bread, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. English lessons were also integrated, with vocabulary related to food and nutrition being practiced and reinforced.

Grades 5/6: Detectives in the Ingredient Jungle

“What’s healthy and what’s not?” – This was the guiding question for Grades 5 and 6. Together, the students examined food packaging and were shocked to find how often refined sugar appears in everyday products. They learned to read ingredient labels more critically and assess nutritional value independently.

For their healthy breakfast, they followed the food pyramid – focusing on fruits and vegetables and enjoying just a small portion of bread. A big thank-you to all parents who contributed healthy items!

Grade 7: Thoughtful Conversations Over Breakfast

For Grade 7, the shared breakfast became a platform for meaningful conversation. Guided by teachers Patrick Blanke-Schelle, Russell Adu Apaw, and Bernard Mensah, students discussed topics ranging from sugar consumption and mental performance to broader questions of personal responsibility and food choices. It was a meal that nourished both body and mind.

Conclusion: One Morning – Many Insights

The Healthy Breakfast Day at GISA showed how engaging and enriching the topic of nutrition can be when integrated into everyday school life. From our youngest learners in Kindergarten to our secondary school students, everyone participated with curiosity and commitment – and walked away with new knowledge and a taste for healthier choices.

A heartfelt thank-you goes to all families for their support and to our dedicated staff for making this special day a success!
