📬 Newsletter 09.05.2025

We hope you had a great week! At GISA, we’ve also had many exciting developments — from a Healthy Breakfast Day to musical rehearsals and important updates from our cafeteria. Here's what’s been happening and what’s coming up soon:

🥝 Healthy Breakfast at GISA
This past Wednesday, our entire school — from Kindergarten through Secondary — celebrated a Healthy Breakfast Day. With lots of hands-on activities, joyful learning moments, and valuable insights, students explored the importance of healthy eating in age-appropriate ways.
From making fruit and vegetable salads, to reading ingredient labels critically, and enjoying a shared breakfast in class — our learners engaged with great enthusiasm.
A big thank you to the dedicated team that made this meaningful morning possible!

🎭 “Hercules – The Musical” – Countdown Begins
Just two weeks to go! The excitement is building — and so are the nerves! Our performers and backstage crew are giving their all, perfecting every line, song, and step.
We're now rehearsing on the stage at the Goethe-Institut to get a feel for the space. Our decoration team is working hard to build a stage set worthy of Mount Olympus, while the costume crew is bringing ancient Greece to life with vibrant designs. Meanwhile, the tech team is adjusting lights and sound — and maybe even testing a fog machine for added drama.
It’s incredible to see everything coming together — we can’t wait to share the result with you!

💐 Happy Mother’s Day!
To all mothers in our GISA community: We wish you a beautiful and joyful Mother's Day weekend full of love and appreciation.
Kindergarten and Nursery
This week in the nursery, we crafted Mother’s Day gifts with lots of joy and creativity. The children were fully engaged and created lovely little works of art.
On Wednesday, we enjoyed a delicious healthy breakfast. Together we shared fruit, vegetables, bread, and other nutritious treats — and everyone loved it!
Healthy eating was also the central theme in kindergarten. We discussed which foods we know, where they come from, which ones are especially healthy, and which should be eaten frequently or only in small amounts. Along the way, we also learned lots of new vocabulary — in both English and German!
The highlight, of course, was our healthy breakfast on Wednesday. The children helped enthusiastically with chopping fruits and vegetables and setting the tables.
Healthy eating also featured in our learning sessions. The children listened to a presentation by Year 7 on the topic and watched a short video about how fruits and vegetables are processed. They also played a food memory game and sorted the foods into “healthy” and “unhealthy” categories.
Primary School

This week, we were happy to welcome two new children to Year 1/2. What an exciting week it was! At the healthy breakfast, the students prepared their own fruit and vegetable salads and then enjoyed them together at a large table in the classroom. Since the atmosphere was so cozy, we stayed seated a bit longer and crafted our Mother’s Day gifts at the big group table. Our preschool class paid us a visit and joined in the crafting as well.
There was also plenty to share about the Easter holidays. This happened in the form of a guessing game: the children anonymously wrote down short holiday anecdotes, and we had to guess who had experienced what.
For example: “What I really didn’t expect was that my Easter present ended up in the washing machine.”
In Year 3/4, we started the second half of the semester with lots of energy and motivation.
In German, Year 3 focused intensively on grammar and reading comprehension. We will continue with our reading journal next week.
Year 4 worked on descriptive writing.
In DaF, the focus was on adjectives and school supplies. In Maths, we prepared for the upcoming test by reviewing how to read the clock and practicing mental arithmetic and multiplication tables through games and exercises.
In Science, we explored the importance of balanced nutrition for a healthy life — a perfect tie-in with our healthy breakfast on Wednesday. It was an insightful and practical lesson.
In Music, we are now assembling the different elements of our Cup Song. One group created a dance, another is using cups rhythmically, we have drummers and many beautiful singing voices. The next step is to coordinate and, ideally, perform together as a group.
Some parent-teacher conferences have already taken place — I’m looking forward to the remaining ones next week.
Secondary School
In Year 5/6, we’ve set the goal of working hard over the next few weeks — there is still much to do, and we plan to make the most of our time.
In Year 6 German, we wrapped up our focus on grammar and the use of “s,” “ss,” and “ß.” We’re now turning our attention to fables and defining moral messages.
Year 5 students received back their tests on fairy tales this week.
In the coming weeks, we will dedicate time to spelling in order to reduce writing errors.
In Maths: Year 5 will take a test on May 19 covering angles and circles. We are actively preparing for this. Year 6 continued working on operations with decimal numbers.
In Geography, students explored Africa’s climate zones — focusing on the tropics, subtropics, the Sahel region, and monsoon zones.
In Year 5 Biology, we continued our unit on the heart and explored the process of breathing. We also studied the main internal organs of the human body, their locations, and their functions. A short assessment showed very impressive results.
In Year 6 Biology, we began the topic of the human skeleton. Students learned about the importance of bones and the biological names of bones from the skull to the phalanges.
Students received project assignments to present next week. They’re working in pairs to strengthen teamwork skills.
After a relaxing break, Year 7 students were happy to be reunited with their friends. The first week back was filled with new topics and lots of rehearsals for the upcoming musical.
In Science, students worked on presentations about solidification, density, and sublimation. In Physics, we also introduced the topic of magnetism.
In DaF, Year 7 reviewed articles and learned vocabulary related to school.
In English, the class gave presentations on healthy food and healthy breakfasts. This was a perfect fit for the all-school healthy breakfast on Wednesday.
In German, students prepared for their upcoming test. This included peer feedback through writing conferences and revisiting the rules on turning verbs and adjectives into nouns.

The DaF class in Secondary School (motivated learners from Years 5, 6, and 7) explored the German tradition of school cones (“Schultüten”) before the holidays and even made some to welcome new students joining us in May. The results were wonderfully creative and colorful.
This week, the theme was vocabulary around friendship, school, lessons, and also food and the food pyramid.
In grammar, they practiced the formal address (“Sie”), negation, and possessive articles.
Today (Friday), the DaF group had a learning objective check-up on the week’s topics.
The students also prepared profile cards for an upcoming exchange with students from the University of Potsdam. Next week, they’ll receive profile cards in return and prepare to meet their interview partners.
