Newsletter 28.02.2025

With this newsletter, we say goodbye to a short vacation week from 03 - 07. 03. 2025. Between two extremely eventful weeks, this little break seems welcome and well deserved.
The children's carnival was celebrated today with a mixture of “kölscher” music, children's songs and party music. The children presented their varied costumes. Thanks to the parents, the children enjoyed breakfast together to the full. “Upstairs, downstairs” then lured even the last seated children onto the dance floor.
There was a very special atmosphere on campus at the Ghana Family Festival at the end of the “Made in Ghana” project period.
Spontaneously fancy a public screening of the Bundesliga tomorrow at the Swiss Club? We'll be showing the conference at 2.30 pm!
Directly after the vacations, on Monday, 10.03.2025, we will be joined by 14 students who have received the Excellence Scholarship. At 8 a.m. we will welcome the new family in a short assembly, to which you are cordially invited.
On Wednesday, 12.03.2025 our Kids Edition of the GISA Cup will take place. Kick off is at 9am and we expect the final around 2pm. We are looking forward to welcoming various schools and organizations from Accra and celebrating the joy of soccer together. The focus will be on elementary school and young players. Highlights will be the various trophies and individual prizes to boost the children's confidence and talents, but most importantly togetherness. Spectators are welcome!
On March 15, the time has finally come - the GISA Cup 2025 is just around the corner! We are already in soccer fever and can hardly wait to experience a rousing tournament with 20 teams from 12 different nations. Excitement, team spirit and unforgettable moments are guaranteed!
In addition to exciting soccer matches, there will also be plenty to discover off the pitch. Culinary delicacies will be served to create a real stadium atmosphere. But not only soccer fans will get their money's worth:
- A creative craft station for children
- Exciting adventure and skill tasks from the Ghana Mountaineers
- Goal wall shooting for all those who want to test their accuracy
From 4 p.m., a DJ will provide the right atmosphere - time to shake a leg and celebrate together!
The tournament day starts at 8:30 am, the grand final takes place at 6 pm. We look forward to numerous spectators, enthusiastic fans and a great shared experience. Be there and experience an unforgettable day full of sport, fun and team spirit!

The non profit support association of the German International School Accra e.V. introduces itself!
In Germany, it is a widespread and great opportunity to financially support other non-profit organisations such as schools through sponsoring associations. School booster clubs are an association of parents, teachers, young people, alumni and other sponsors, such as companies, freelancers and other committed citizens who want to support the concerns of a school and its pupils in addition to the budgeted funds.

We are delighted that it has now also been possible for GISA, as a recognised German school abroad, to establish a sponsoring association that is recognised as a non-profit organisation in Germany. The aim is to create added value for our children. We see great potential among people and companies who are or have been very close to GISA and also among those who are generally happy to make a charitable contribution. Support is possible in the form of a membership for € 12 per year or through any donation in kind or in cash. The donations generated will directly benefit the GISA students, e.g. by purchasing playground equipment, renovating and equipping the library or creating a social fund for students in need. These are our first planned projects.
And by the way, every membership fee and every donation is tax-deductible (at least in Germany), as we are a recognised non-profit association registered in the register of associations in Germany.
There will be a separate tab for the Association on the school website, where we also want to provide information about current developments and projects in the future. On 12 March, as part of the GISA Kids Cup, we will have an information stand ready for interested parents at 8.00 am. We will be happy to introduce GISA employees to the support association at the Friday meeting on 14 March.
Everyone is welcome to join in and to tell others about it!

Sustainability at the German International School Accra
Sustainability is a top priority for us! In cooperation with Sika Plastic Recycling, we are committed to recycling waste. Since this year, Sika Plastic has been collecting emptied PET bottles, drinking water sachets, plastic, waste paper and shredded paper at DISA on the last Friday of every month. For every kilo of recycled materials, DISA receives 2 GHS (2,000 GHS per tonne), which is invested in sustainability, maintenance and renovations at DISA. You can support us by bringing these materials to our labelled collection point in front of the canteen. Please make sure that bottles are emptied beforehand. If you have any questions, please contact the administration! 🌍♻️
Kindergarten and Nursery:
Over the past few days, we have been working intensively on the topic of Made in Ghana in the crèche and have discovered many new things in the process. The children had a lot of fun colouring in the map of Ghana in the colours of the country's flag - red, yellow and green. Another highlight was our musical journey: We drummed together and practised our rhythm in the process. Making our own musical instruments was particularly exciting. The children were allowed to fill rattles made of Kalabash wood with corn and sand and then cover them with traditional fabrics. This not only allowed them to be creative, but also to learn how such instruments are made in Ghana. A particularly exciting moment was the pounding of fufu, where the children were able to experience first-hand how traditional food is prepared in Ghana. They took part with great enthusiasm and learnt through play. On Friday, we celebrated carnival together! The children enjoyed a delicious breakfast and had lots of fun dancing to carnival music. The atmosphere was full of joy, laughter and lots of colourful costumes!
A successful carnival and Ghana week is coming to an end at the kindergarten. We made garlands, sang and danced to carnival songs and prepared for our performance of the Ghanaian national anthem. On Monday, the school children came to visit us again to read to us in small groups. We also prepared farewell presents again this week, as we unfortunately had to say goodbye to two children today. During learning time this week, the children focussed on numbers and quantities. We counted together, recognised and assigned quantities and number pictures and coloured in the correct number of circles on our worksheets. In English Club this week, the beginners listened to a story about a sick dog. The children were given picture cards and new vocabulary to match to the story. This week, the advanced learners have been learning how to recognise and name digraphs (wr, gn, kn, th, sh, ph, ch) and the phonics ABC. We ended the week with a proper carnival party. Together with the school children, we were able to dance, sing, celebrate and show off our costumes before we regained our strength at the buffet in the kindergarten after a long polonaise across the schoolyard.
Primary school:
Year 1/2 had an eventful week with the Ghana festival, carnival and the farewell of a classmate. The children have been studying hard and partied hard at the celebrations. Cambridge English lessons focussed on exciting sentence beginnings to bring stories to life. German lessons were also centred around stories - with a video tool that the children really enjoyed. Many parents have already received videos. The parents' consultation days start on 10/03/25 and the first survey has already been shared in the WhatsApp group. The period runs until the Easter holidays, so don't stress if no date fits in the first week - there will be many more surveys and time slots to follow.
Class 3/4 had an emotionally exciting week: in addition to the normal lessons, our week was overshadowed by numerous happy and sad news: We are very happy about Joyc's joyful news, but are also sad that she is already leaving us. In German classes 3 and 4, we did some more extension and derivation work. Our German learners made plans for the future and learnt about the future tense 1.
In maths, we continued to work on multiplication and division. In English we have finished our legend books. The children are happy to read them to you. Laura Lützeler, Emma and Greta have also designed and written their own story on the tablet. I'm sure they'll be happy to present it too. In Science, we learnt about social interaction structures such as introverts and extroverts and considered where we categorise ourselves. We also rehearsed our art/music project on the theme of The Lion King. And we prepared for the upcoming music lessons after the holidays with the DJ workshop with Jocye aka DJ Frisky. We all had so much fun! Happy holidays everyone and I look forward to seeing you again soon.
Secondary school:
The trip to Panbros was very successful. The tour started on the coast. There we were able to observe how the seawater was channelled into the first basins using powerful pumps. The bus then took us to one of the pools from which the salt crystals were harvested in different sizes. The work is hard. The salt is pushed together by hand and collected in large piles in vats. From there, it is packed into 25-kilo sacks. In the laboratory, the salt is tested for content and again packed in 500 gram, 1 kilo, 10 kilo and 25 kilo bags. A big thank you goes out to Russel Adu. Thanks for the organisation. We learnt a lot, had great fun and it was good to get out of the school routine.
The first product was pitched in Ethics/IT. ‘Skippy Juice’ is a skipping rope with integrated water bottles as handles. An ingenious idea that was presented well. In German, presentations and projects were completed in Year 6. After the holidays we will try our hand at dubbing. Remember to look for a suitable film scene during the holidays.
In geography/history lessons, the students were excited to use their artistic skills by drawing and colouring in flags of different European countries. This fun activity not only encouraged creativity, but also helped them to learn about the history of each country and what they are known for. It was a wonderful way for them to combine art with culture!
There was a lot going on again this week in class 7! 🎉
📐 Maths: We have completed the topic of terms and are now starting on equations.
📖 German: The class test was discussed and improved.
🔬 Physics: A test was on the programme - fingers crossed for good results!
🌍 Ghana Festival: We had a lot of fun presenting dances, games and languages from Ghana. A great experience for everyone!
🏀 Sport: We're staying on the ball - basketball training continued.
💻 Project work: Exciting online interview with a Telekom employee! Our recycling website continues to take shape.
We are looking forward to the coming week of holidays! 😊
