Newsletter 31.01.2025

The first half of the school year ended today with the handing out of the half-year reports. Congratulations and praise to all the students who have achieved outstanding results!
Our secondary school football team is also playing in Old Ningo, we keep our fingers crossed and thank Judith Doe for the impressions!
On Tuesday, January 28, 2025, Mirna (Board Chairperson), Standley (Board Member) and Katrin (Head of Administration) were invited to Citi FM Accra for a radio interview. In the broadcast, we had the opportunity to present our school and its special advantages, including our high-quality educational offer, international orientation and individual support for our students. We also presented our Excellence Scholarship Program, which facilitates access to our school for talented and dedicated Accra students. It was a great opportunity to introduce the German International School Accra to a wider audience.
The interns Alicia Bergner and Lena Prosser as well as intern Lennard Brodner were bid a grateful farewell by the school community with a serenade and many hugs.
Try-out week new AG`s
We had an amazing try-out week for our afterschool program! It was wonderful to see so many children participating, exploring new activities, and having fun. Many students tried something new, and the energy and enthusiasm were fantastic throughout the week.
As we move forward, we kindly remind you to submit the registration forms as soon as possible, preferably by Monday, to secure your child’s spot in the program.
Additionally, please make sure your child has the appropriate materials for their chosen activities:
- Football: Football boots, long socks, jersey, and shorts.
- Dancing, Tennis, Taekwondo, and Boxing: Comfortable clothes suitable for movement.
- Skating: If you have skates at home, it would be great if your child could bring their own skates for the lessons.
We’re excited for a great semester ahead!
Lunch caterer North Ridge – Adjustment last newsletter for the Nursery and Kindergarten price
We at North Ridge Catering are delighted to hear how much the kids are enjoying their lunches! It’s always a pleasure to provide meals that make their day even better.
We’ve observed that students in classes 3 -7 have been enjoying larger portions to meet their growing appetites. As a result, the price for their meals will be adjusted slightly from 37 to 40 cedi for class 1-4, and 45 cedi for class 5-7 to reflect this change. The price for the nursery and kindergarten is going down to 32 cedi. Thank you for your understanding and for allowing us to continue serving your children with delicious and nutritious meals!
Reminder: If your child is unwell and will not be eating lunch at school, please let us know by 8:00 AM. This helps us plan meals accordingly and avoid unnecessary charges for the day.
Warm regards,
The North Ridge Catering Team
Embellishments

Kindergarten and Nursery:
This week we welcomed two new children to our nursery! We also started with our new topic of colors. Together, we explored the different colors and playfully assigned objects to them. The children really enjoyed consciously searching their surroundings for colors. They were particularly enthusiastic about making color magnifying glasses. With a lot of enthusiasm and creativity, they created colorful magnifying glasses that are now being used with curiosity to explore and discover. We are already looking forward to the coming weeks and to further exploring the topic of colors!
This week we had a visit from some of the school children at the kindergarten. They came with books to read to us and the children were allowed to choose which story they wanted to listen to. We also started preparing for carnival, showed the new children our “pirate song” from last year and got to know the song “Oben Unten”. During learning time, we took a closer look at our store. We thought about what the things we can buy here are called, what colors they are and matched them with the right items. We also repeated the numbers. We recognized number pictures, assigned quantities and thought about which numbers are larger or smaller. At DAF/DAZ we talked about emotions again this week. We also practiced rhymes and the different articles with the help of picture cards. On Friday, it was finally time for our long-awaited trip to Splash & Play. All the children from the shark and elephant groups were able to take part in a morning full of games, slides, splashing around and, above all, lots of fun!
Primary school:
Class 1/2 is in a strong work production phase. The children show very good working behavior, which also includes playing. In the learning game, for example, words were closely scrutinized. Work on the one-off passports is in full swing and the second graders are busy collecting signatures. In the “Reading and Writing” support group, children were able to collect points in Antolin and demonstrate their reading comprehension. The “Weaving” project group is also making great progress: two children from class 1/2 have created beautiful kente-like designs out of paper. Take a look for yourself!
Class 3/4 continued working on 1x1 in math this week, so we would like to repeat it again at the weekend. In German, we worked on the spelling strategies of prolongation and derivation. In class 3/4, science lessons continued with mixtures and solutions. Afterwards we did a short assessment to see how well they understood the concept and their marks were remarkable. We had another final session with our science intern Mr. Brodner Lennard to say goodbye and we were grateful for his teaching and experience. This week, Class 3/4 looked at the key aspect of the English language, which is the importance of rhyme. We discussed how rhyming words can enhance the musical quality of poems, making them more enjoyable to read and listen to. Rhymes also help with recall and can create a sense of cohesion within a poem. Encourage your child to share the poems and rhymes they have made at home! A mini-unit on healthy eating was run by Alicia Bergner in the Giraffes support band. The pupils found the topic interesting and prepared a healthy breakfast on Friday.
Secondary school:
In science lessons in Year 6, the pupils have been studying the intricacies of the human body, in particular the circulatory system. This gave them an insight into the organs responsible for blood circulation, the ways in which oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood passes through the body and the vital functions of the heart, blood vessels (arteries, veins and capillaries) and the blood itself. In Year 5, pupils studied the digestive system, learning the definition of digestion and the organs responsible for it. The pupils also understood the process of digestion and how undigested food comes out of the body. The in-depth study of the circulatory/digestive system will continue next week. This week our students explored the art of writing haiku poetry using figurative language. They learned about the structure of haikus (5-7-5) and how to use images and metaphors to enhance their work. The children enjoyed composing their own haikus and expressing their thoughts and feelings through vivid language. This activity not only improved their writing skills but also deepened their understanding of poetry. The Daf group mainly worked on adjectives, how to “increase” and how to compare with the conjunction “as”, while the German class worked on “sentence structures”. A highlight of this week was the farewell party for our interns. We gathered the whole school and sang a song for them before hugging them one last time and saying “Auf Wiedersehen - for now”. This week, the seventh graders have started a new topic: “Sign language and characters - examining non-fiction texts and media”. The coming lessons will focus on the meanings of signs and language; we will extract information from factual texts, illustrations and graphics and present it clearly. In science, the students have been studying rocks and the rock cycle. This enabled them to understand how rocks are formed and which stages play a role. Students also learned about the different types of rocks, how they are formed and how rocks go through the weathering process to become stones and soil. We also looked at what each rock looks like and what it is made of. We also covered a small section on the food chain and the food web. The students were given homework on the food chain and food web. This week our students continued to learn how to interpret and analyze poetry. They examined various poetic elements such as imagery, rhyme and rhythm and discussed how these contribute to the overall meaning and emotion of a poem. In mathematics this week, they looked at antiproportional mapping and the rule of three in a factual context. In geography, all climate zones were examined and in art and history, heraldry and personal biography were brought together in an individual family coat of arms. In addition, some pupils from Years 5, 6 and 7 will be representing the German school at a soccer tournament in Old Ningo.
