Weaving Meets Mathematics – A Project that Connects
What does weaving have to do with mathematics? The children in our newly launched weaving project discovered the answer very quickly when our young weaving expert, Catherine from Grade 4, gave us a lovely introduction to the art of weaving.
Catherine explained that the warp threads on the loom should always be set up in an even number — otherwise the pattern can easily become mixed up. A real aha moment for many of the students, who suddenly realized: weaving and math go hand in hand!
And off they went: in pairs, the children prepared their looms and started weaving. Up – down, up – down and back again. With great focus, patience, and joy, they wove row by row, creating their first small pieces.
On Thursday, the creativity continued as one group crafted their own mini cardboard looms, ensuring that next week every child can begin working on their own personal weaving project.
And we have big plans: Inspired by traditional Ghanaian colors and patterns, we aim to create many small woven pieces and combine them into one large, colorful quilt — just in time for Ghana Day next year.
A project that weaves together hands, minds, and hearts — thread by thread.
